-Shawnee- On Friday, February 12, 2021, Charles Leon Usher, 89, loving husband, father, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully at home with his sister, June.
Charles was born on August 5, 1931 in Shawnee, Georgia to Roy and Blanche Usher (Long). He was a graduate of Effingham County High School, and served in the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 65 years, Victoria Edwards Usher. He is survived by his son, Glenn Randall Usher; sisters, June Usher Chavous and Glenda Usher Wilson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives.
Charles greatly enjoyed his position as manager of the Effingham County Fair for 17 years. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, gospel music and vintage cars. He was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 188, and worked across the country as a pipefitter supervisor. He worked at Union Camp Paper Corp for 26 years. He also owned and ran the Shawnee General Store alongside his wife Victoria and served as an Effingham County Commissioner. He participated many years in the Farm Bureau and the American Legion. In retirement, he worked with Riggs Funeral Home. He was a lifelong member of Corinth Baptist Church whose members have provided much appreciated food, visits, and support.
Charles had many friends who attended to him at the end of his life that his family would like to thank and acknowledge: Shirley, Joan, Bob, Patrick, and Dee. They would also like to thank Amedisys Hospice, especially Sarah and Christy, for their love and care.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 20th at 2 pm at Corinth Baptist Church, Shawnee Georgia. Outdoor visitation will be Saturday, February 20th from 1-2 pm, Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Masks and social distancing appreciated.
