Mr. Jackie Young, 74, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, July 22, 2023, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife, son, son’s wife, and daughter.
Born in Savannah, Georgia Jackie was the youngest son of 11 children born to Veola and Odis Young. He was a graduate of Groves High School from which he was drafted into the Army for the Vietnam War, from there he achieved many degrees and awards of accomplishments. He was a level 5 specialist in the United States Army and served 2 years of active duty in Vietnam. Jackie was honorably discharged from the military in 1972 with a National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, 2 Overseas Service Bars, Sharpshooter Badge, Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and a diploma in helicopter mechanics.
Jackie was a character if you knew him. He loved his family and his animals, but John Wayne was his true love. Jackie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley Ann Young; son and daughter-in-law, Jessie Wyatt and Jessica Young ; daughter, Kelly Janice Pickard; grandsons, Kaymon Young, Larry Chase III, and Nicholas Akins; 1 future granddaughter, Veola Clarsey Young; 4 great grandchildren, Josiah, Madeline, Ronin, Declan; sisters, Loretta Young and Joan Cahill; and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Carlson & Riggs Funeral Home on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 3-4pm with a funeral service to follow in the chapel of the funeral home at 4pm with military honors.
