James R. (Jim) Thompson, 83, died on January 18, 2019 in Washington, DC accompanied by his wife, son, and daughter-in-law.
Jim was born on December 2, 1935 in Vidalia, GA and lived in Guyton for most of his life before moving to Washington, DC to be closer to his family during his final months.
He was a graduate of Guyton High School and earned a degree in Business Administration at the University of Georgia.
An accomplished businessman and entrepreneur, Jim is best known for establishing and managing Thompson’s IGA in Guyton. He also launched other successful businesses including Thompson’s Hardware and Speak Ezy, a pay-telephone entity. He enjoyed working outdoors at his family’s farm in Egypt, GA. Jim also served multiple terms on Guyton’s City Council, either as Mayor or Council Member. Following his retirement, he loved to receive family and friends at his home on the Savannah River. He especially loved sharing time with his two grandsons, taking them and other family members on walks through the woods.
Surviving are his wife, Mariben Thompson of Guyton, GA; his son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Victoria Thompson of Washington, DC; his grandsons, Andrew and Erik Thompson, also of Washington, DC; and his brother, Jere Thompson, of Philadelphia, PA.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Friday, January 25, 2019 at Riggs Funeral Home.
A private interment will take place in Guyton Cemetery.
